Ontario Government Helps Launch One Family – One Judge Approach

The Ontario Provincial Government reports that Ontario families in Toronto dealing with domestic violence have a new option that makes the justice system easier to navigate, increases consistency of court orders, and leads to faster and more effective resolutions.

The Ontario Court of Justice has launched the Integrated Domestic Violence Court – a one family, one judge pilot – in Toronto. It will allow a family who is dealing with domestic violence to have both their criminal and family law cases heard by the same judge – making it easier, faster and more affordable.

This complements the government’s overall family justice reforms to improve the support to vulnerable Ontarians who come before family courts – making courts easier to use, less confrontational and more affordable, and providing better access to justice.

The Integrated Domestic Violence Court is available at the Toronto Court location of 311 Jarvis Street. A community resource coordinator will connect parties with community resources and services. Participation in this court will be voluntary; all parties must consent before the case can be transferred to the Integrated Domestic Violence Court.

Divorce and family property cases in Toronto will continue to be heard by the Superior Court of Justice.  Learn more about this program and services provided by the Ontario Government at http://www.news.ontario.ca/newsroom/en
