Russell I. Alexander Awards 2016 Charitable Giving Fund Grant

Luke`s Place is excited to receive $2,500.00.

BROOKLIN, ON December 21, 2016 –

A local business has just boosted Luke`s Place with a grant of $2,500.00.

As part of this giving fund, Luke’s Place Support & Resource Centre for Women & Children has been provided with a donation in the amount of $2,500. Luke’s Place opened its doors in 2003 and served 528 abused women with children in Durham Region last year. Luke’s Place was named in memory of Luke, a 3 ½ year old boy who was murdered by his father on his first unsupervised access visit. Luke’s Place is devoted to improving the experiences of abused women in navigating the complex family law process and works towards making sure no other child would face a similar fate.

Luke’s Place Executive Director has said that, “Demand for our services grows annually and donations such as this go a long way towards helping women and their children who are desperate to rebuild their lives free from abuse.”

Luke’s Place Fund Development & Marketing Manager said, “Since we do
not have any core annualized support from government, we rely heavily on community funding to provide abused women and their children in Durham Region with access to our support and resources. Luke’s Place needs donations such as these now more than ever.”

Luke’s Place was also the recipient of a Russell I. Alexander Giving Fund Grant in 2015.

The Russell I. Alexander Charitable Giving Fund provides grants and financial support to community organizations that are doing great work, but may not be as visible as some of their larger counterparts.

Russell I. Alexander Awards 2015 Charitable Giving Fund Grant to Canadian Cyclist Bayley Simpson.

LINDSAY, ON May 28th, 2015 –

A local business has just helped a local athlete and Canadian Cyclist Bayley Simpson with a grant of $500.00.

The Russell I. Alexander Charitable Giving Fund provides grants and financial support to community organizations that are doing great work, but may not be as visible as some of their larger counterparts.

Bayley Simpson says “the grant will help and used for extra costs, such as travel and accommodations, when training in warmer climates, whether on my own or as part of Provincial and National Team projects. In addition, there are many equipment related expenses, including bikes, race and training wheels, and of course consumables, like tires, cables, etc., required for bike maintenance. The support provided by my parents, extended family, coaches, local cycling community and friends, as well as the many generous local business donations, helps to make all of this possible. Without the continued support of my amazing community, I would not be able to compete at this level.”

Russell I. Alexander Awards 2014 Charitable Giving Fund Grant to Kawartha Lakes Food Source

The Kawartha Lakes Food Source is excited to receive $5,000.00.

LINDSAY, ON December 16th, 2014 –

A local business has just helped a local food bank with a grant of $5,000.00. The Kawartha Lakes Food Source is a community effort and not-for-profit organization of volunteers working to reduce hunger in the City of Kawartha Lakes

The Russell I. Alexander Charitable Giving Fund provides grants and financial support to community organizations that are doing great work, but may not be as visible as some of their larger counterparts.

Board Member Dr. Brian Fagan notes that “Kawartha Lakes Food Source opened its doors in March of 2002, after research by members of Rotary revealed a patchwork system of food aid by churches and social agencies. With one agency devoted to collecting and distributing food to food banks, front-line workers could focus on clients rather than stocking their shelves. …the working poor and one-third are on provincial disability support while nine per cent are on a pension. About 40 per cent of those receiving food from the Food Source through its members are children. …In a three-month period, the Food Source provides 11,000 servings of milk, fresh fruit and healthy snacks such as granola bars to hungry schoolchildren.”

Recently the Russell Alexander Giving Fund provided a $5,000 grant to the Lindsay Lynx Girls Minor Hockey Association.  The Grant was used to replace the jerseys for all the teams in the association.

Russell is pictured with the Lynx Bantam B team and their new jerseys.  These girls recently finished first in their league making them the Central East Champs and one of the 4 best Bantam B teams in the Province of Ontario.

These girls are moving on and will be competing this weekend in Mississauga to become the Lower Lakes Champions.

The jerseys look great girls and good luck at the tournament.

Russell Alexander Joins The Covenant House Sleep Out: Executive Edition

Russell Alexander has been invited to be among Toronto’s business and community leaders as they sleep out on the night of Nov. 21st to help homeless kids at Covenant House Toronto.

Led by returning Co-chair, Arlene Dickinson of Dragons’ Den and Tim Leiweke, Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment President and Chief Executive Officer, the 2nd annual Covenant House Sleep Out: Executive Edition will see participants spend the night outside with only sleeping bags and a piece of cardboard to raise awareness and funds for the downtown agency.

This year’s goal is to raise $1 million in one night. Last year’s inaugural event drew over 50 participants and raised more than $538,000.

Tom Anselmi, Tony Chapman, Ben Mulroney, Diane Brisebois, Jenne Beker, Starbucks’ President Annie Young-Scrivner, Porter Airlines’ President Robert Deluce, Toronto Police Chief Bill Blair and Duncan Hannay, Senior Marketing VP at Scotiabank, will be among the expected 80 participants getting a small glimpse of the hardships kids can face on the street.

Russell is participating because sleep out is a great opportunity to experience how many youth live day-to-day.  People often don’t think of homeless youth when it comes to charity work and donations.  For many middle class and upper class Canadians homeless youth is just not a problem on their radar.  Sleep out provides a unique opportunity for executives to walk the talk, experience what many children should never have to experience, and help raise awareness for a serious problem that unfortunately plagues many Canadian families and their children.

Bruce Rivers, Executive Director of Covenant House Toronto, the country’s largest homeless youth agency, says there are at least 10,000 homeless youth in Toronto during any given year.

“When kids don’t have to worry about where they’re going to sleep or where their next meal is coming from, they can focus on their futures,” says Rivers.

Covenant House provides 24/7 crisis shelter and a longer-term residential program with the widest range of services under one roof, including education, counselling, employment assistance and job training. To do all this, the agency relies on donors for 80 percent of its $20-million budget. Last year, Covenant House served about 3,000 young people.

Russell Alexander, Family Lawyers focus is exclusively family law, offering pre-separation legal advice and assisting clients with family related issues including: custody and access, separation agreements, child and spousal support, division of family property, paternity disputes, and enforcement of court orders.
