The Russell Alexander Law Firm has awarded a scholarship to a Toronto student who is graduating high school next year and has an interest in joining the legal community and studying law.

As part of a scholarship program started in 2017, the Ontario family law firm will give high school senior Sidonia Tameshtit $2,000 for tuition and a $500 bonus to cover school supplies such as a new laptop, printer or notebooks.

“It’s always refreshing to hear from young people who intend to move into the legal field in the future,” said Alexander. “We hope that by providing this scholarship we can help ease the costs of entry into the field and expand opportunities.”

The scholarship is open to Canadian students who are about to graduate from high school. Students must have an average of 80 percent or higher and has an interest in joining the legal community and studying law.

An honor student throughout high school, Tameshtit has studied business and STEM, winning awards at her school and at the provincial and regional level. An avid volunteer, lifeguard and varsity softball player, she plans to study chemical engineering before going to law school.

For her essay, Tameshtit focused on the risks of allowing separating couples to appear before a judge with streaming video services like Zoom, noting the potential for domestic violence victims to be threatened and confidential information disclosed.

“Sidonia’s essay was a thoughtful exploration of the issue, showing the kind of analytical thinking that is so valuable in the legal field,” added Alexander. “We are proud to be helping her on her professional path through this scholarship.”
