Beyond the Courtroom: What We Are Actually Doing to Improve Access to Justice

Written by Russell Alexander ria@russellalexander.com / (905) 655-6335

There is no shortage of discussion about the challenges facing the family law system.

Cost is rising. Delays persist. Accessibility remains uneven.

Technology is part of the conversation. Court process is part of the conversation. But at some point, discussion needs to translate into action.

This is where the focus shifts.

The Gap Between the System and the Public

A large number of people navigating separation or divorce are doing so with limited guidance.

They are:

  • searching online late at night
  • trying to understand legal terms on their own
  • making decisions without fully appreciating the consequences

Not because they want to. Because they feel they have no other option.
That gap is where real change needs to happen.

A Different Approach

At Russell Alexander Collaborative Family Lawyers, we have taken the position that access to justice is not solved by a single initiative.

It requires multiple points of entry.

Different people need different forms of support at different stages.

The approach has to reflect that reality.

1. Live Events That Actually Educate

Through FamilyLLB and related initiatives, we host:

The goal is straightforward.

Not to market. To educate.

We focus on:

  • what to expect in the process
  • common mistakes to avoid
  • how decisions made early affect outcomes later

When people understand the system, they make better decisions within it.

2. Pro Bono Days and Community Support

Access to justice cannot depend entirely on ability to pay.

We have incorporated:

These are not full retainers. They are entry points.

A short conversation at the right time can prevent:

  • unnecessary conflict
  • poor strategic decisions
  • escalation that becomes costly later

This is where meaningful impact often starts.

3. Public-Facing Legal Education

Most people do not start with a lawyer. They start with a search.

That is why we invest heavily in:

  • blog content through FamilyLLB
  • articles addressing current legal developments
  • practical guides written in plain language
  • video content explaining key issues

The goal is not to replace legal advice.

It is to ensure that when someone begins their search, they find information that is accurate, responsible, and grounded in real experience.

4. Rethinking How Legal Services Are Delivered

The traditional model does not work for everyone.

Some clients need:

  • full representation

Others need:

  • guidance at specific stages
  • help with strategy
  • clarity on options

We continue to explore ways to:

  • meet clients earlier in the process
  • provide targeted support where it matters most
  • reduce unnecessary cost while maintaining quality

This is not about lowering standards. It is about aligning services with real-world needs.

5. Ongoing Advocacy for a Better System

The system itself must evolve.

We have been vocal on issues such as:

  • the return to in-person motions
  • the importance of virtual hearings
  • the need for efficiency in court processes

These are not abstract policy discussions.

They directly affect:

  • cost
  • timing
  • client experience

We will continue to engage in these discussions publicly and within the profession.

6. Building a Bridge Between Technology and Judgment

Technology is already part of how people engage with legal issues.

Ignoring that does not protect the profession. It weakens it.

Our focus is on:

  • helping clients use information responsibly
  • stepping in where judgment and strategy are required
  • ensuring that outcomes are grounded in experience, not assumptions

This is where lawyers add value.

Where This Leads

Access to justice is not solved by one reform, one platform, or one policy change.

It improves when:

  • information is easier to access
  • entry points are more flexible
  • professionals engage earlier and more effectively

That is the direction we are focused on.

Final Thought

The legal system will continue to evolve, whether the profession leads that change or reacts to it.

Our position is simple. Be part of the solution.
